UAE to mark 50 years of Armed Forces unification with legacy of strength
Women and national service reshaping the country’s modern defence framework
ABU DHABI – The United Arab Emirates is set to mark the 50th anniversary of the unification of its Armed Forces tomorrow, commemorating five decades of strategic development, operational strength and national service.
The milestone reflects a journey shaped by modernisation, resilience and a consistent commitment to safeguarding sovereignty. Over the years, the Armed Forces have evolved into a highly integrated institution capable of responding to complex regional and global challenges.
The anniversary comes at a time when the Armed Forces have demonstrated heightened efficiency and preparedness, particularly in countering recent Iranian aggression. Defence systems successfully intercepted ballistic missiles and drones targeting the UAE, marking a notable operational achievement and reinforcing the country’s security architecture.
UAE Armed Forces
The Armed Forces continue to advance through a structured approach centred on readiness and multi-dimensional response capabilities. This framework integrates land, air, naval and cyber domains into a cohesive defence system designed to ensure rapid coordination and execution.
Land forces remain the backbone of national defence, operating under a concept of smart manoeuvre that prioritises speed and precision. Modern armoured vehicles, advanced artillery systems and reconnaissance platforms are interconnected through digital command networks, enabling real-time data sharing and enhanced battlefield awareness.
Air power
Air capabilities form a central pillar of the UAE’s deterrence strategy. Multi-role aircraft equipped for long-range missions provide both defensive and offensive capabilities, ensuring protection of vital interests while supporting ground and naval operations with precision.
Beyond aircraft, air superiority is reinforced through an integrated network of early warning systems, air defence platforms and advanced command centres. Continuous joint training exercises with international partners further strengthen the operational capabilities of Emirati pilots and defence personnel.
Maritime reach
With its strategic location overlooking one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors, the UAE places significant emphasis on naval strength. Maritime security extends beyond territorial waters, safeguarding shipping lanes, energy supplies and global trade routes.
Naval forces have enhanced their operational scope through the deployment of multi-role vessels, coastal surveillance technologies and unmanned systems. These capabilities ensure comprehensive monitoring and rapid response across critical maritime zones.
The development of national defence industries represents a key transformation within the Armed Forces. The UAE has shifted from reliance on external procurement to active participation in the design and production of advanced military technologies, reinforcing long-term strategic independence.
At the core of this evolution remains the human element. The UAE continues to invest in advanced training programmes, combining academic and military education through national institutions and international partnerships. This approach ensures a highly skilled and adaptable force capable of meeting emerging challenges.
National service has played a pivotal role in strengthening societal readiness, embedding defence awareness across the population. This framework positions the Armed Forces as an integral part of national identity rather than a separate entity.
Women have also become an essential component of this transformation. Their integration into the Armed Forces reflects a broader national vision of inclusion, supported by institutions such as the Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School. Female participation in national service has exceeded 11 per cent in some cohorts, marking a significant regional milestone.
Alongside defence responsibilities, the Armed Forces continue to contribute to humanitarian and relief operations worldwide, supporting emergency response efforts and reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to global stability and assistance initiatives.
